MANILA - 'The Voice Kids' finalist Juan Karlos Labajo showed his acting skills in this week's episode of ABS-CBN's drama anthology "Maalaala Mo Kaya" (MMK).
Labajo acted as himself and showed his life prior to joining "The Voice Kids."
The young singer grew up with his grandmother and uncle after his mother left to live with her new family.
Labajo's father, a German his mother exchanged letters with, left the country without knowing about him.
Life was difficult for Labajo and his family. They had to transfer from one house to another as they were not able to pay their rent on time.
He was also bullied in school because of his appearance.
But the biggest challenge in his life was when he learned that his mother was suffering from pancreatic cancer stage 4, with only a few months to live.
Labajo also said he once called his German father, who answered the phone but refused to talk to him.
He auditioned for "The Voice Kids" a few months after his mother's death. During the Blind Auditions, he mentioned that his performance was dedicated to his mother.
Talking about his 'MMK' experience, Labajo said he is glad he was able to share a part of him to his supporters through this episode.
”Akala po ng iba, mayaman ako dahil po sa itsura ko. Pero ang totoo po, sa Cebu ang dami po naming utang, nangungupahan lang kami at palipat-lipat ng bahay,” Labajo admitted.
Although he was nervous about it, Labajo said he is glad that he got to play himself in the episode.
“Pumasok po sa isip ko na grabe yung ‘MMK,’ talagang dapat magaling ka sa pag-iyak, dapat feel mo 'yung emotions. Dapat hindi ka lang mag-a-act, especially na buhay ko 'yung storya. Pero nakaka-relate ako [kasi ako 'yung gaganap],” he said.
The hashtag #MMKJuanKarlos became a trending topic in the Philippines and worldwide throughout the episode.
