MANILA -- The acclaimed Lav Diaz film "Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan" has been selected as the Philippines' official entry to the 87th Academy Awards.
The Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP) will submit the four-hour movie to compete in the Best Foreign Language Film category of the Oscars.
The official nominees in this category will be announced in Janary 2015, with the awards ceremony scheduled on February 22.
The news was confirmed by the production team behind "Norte" on the film's official Twitter page on Wednesday. Lead star Angeli Bayani also confirmed the selection on her Facebook page.
The historical drama set in Ilocos Norte has been well-received by critics, both locally and internationally.
It was among the favorites of last year's Cannes Film Festival and has since figured prominently in worldwide polls listing the best films of 2013. It also bagged the top prize at the Nuremberg International Human Rights Film Festival in Germany.
"Norte" reaped top prizes at the 44th Gawad Urian, including Best Film, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography and Best Actress for Bayani.
