MANILA -- "John Denver Trending," the best film from this year's Cinemalaya, is set to be shown in next month's 24th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) in South Korea, it was revealed this Thursday.
The dark drama about a young student who becomes a victim of cyberbullying after being accused of stealing an iPad from one of his classmates is part of the festival's New Currents Section.
It will compete with films from countries such as Kyrgyzstan, China, Iran, Taiwan, India, Vietnam, South Korea, and Japan.
"John Denver Trending" stars Meryll Soriano and won Best Film at the 2019 Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival. It also took home Best Actor for Jansen Magpusao, who played the title role.
It is directed by Arden Rod Condez.
Other local films that will be shown in the 2019 BIFF are Raymund Gutierrez's "Verdict" and Isabel Sandoval's "Lingua Franca" -- both part of the A Window on Asian Cinema section.
Brillante Mendoza's first movie with Judy Ann Santos, "Mindanao," is also set to be featured in the film festival.
