MANILA -- Kapamilya singer Jaya has revealed that she is deaf in one ear.
Jaya made the revelation in an interview with "Tonight With Boy Abunda" on Thursday, after she was asked about her reputation as a "terror hurado" on "Tawag ng Tanghalan."
"You cannot please everyone. I'd been singing for 30 plus years. I'm deaf in my right ear because when I was singing in the (United) States puro malalakas na speakers 'yan. I'm about 30% to 40% off sa right, so it's muffled," she said.
But even with her hearing problem, Jaya said she's trying her best to do what is right when it comes to singing.
"Pero hindi 'yon dahilan para hindi ko itama ang mali. Kasi ang sinasabi nila is opinion and I have to respect that but at the same time I respect more the opinions of those who know how to sing. Lagi naman akong nakakatanggap ng advice, tips, criticisms from the pros and I need it to grow. Hindi ako nahe-hurt dahil sinabi nila 'yan because at the end of the day most of these people probably never see me perform. Some of them are super young, hindi na nila kilala ako," Jaya said.
When it comes to being labeled as a "terror judge" of "Tawag ng Tanghalan," Jaya explained that they have rules to follow.
"Ang 'Tawag ng Tanghalan' ay hindi biro, mahirap siyang tuntungan. The only reason why they get gonged is because we also have rules. Medyo nakakatatlo, apat na mistakes na, puwede na, it's our prerogative. Kapag ako nag-gong gusto kong malaman niya bakit," Jaya shared.
"Lahat ng sumasali sa TNT ang respeto ko at pagmamahal namin ay nandoon para sa kanila. You know what we do before they sing, kinakawayan ko sila, 'ngiti-ngiti,' ayos, because I know they need that," the singer added.
