MANILA -- (UPDATED) The "Maalaala Mo Kaya" (MMK) episode featuring the story of Lyca Gairanod proved to be a ratings juggernaut last Saturday.

The 9-year-old "The Voice Kids" champion played herself in the TV retelling of her story as a scavenger in Tanza, Cavite. She co-starred with screen veterans Malou de Guzman and Ronnie Lazaro in her acting debut.

The highly anticipated episode registered a nationwide rating of 38.4%, "Maalaala Mo Kaya" said on its official Facebook page on Monday -- or triple the score of GMA’s “Magpakailanman,” which only got 12.8%.

Producer ABS-CBN subscribes to ratings data provided by Kantar Media, which uses a panel size of 2,609 urban and rural homes to represent 100% of the Philippines TV viewing population.

To compare, "Maalaala Mo Kaya," which airs every Saturday, had an average national audience share of 26.4% in July, ranking third overall as the most watched program in the country.

The young singer is proving to be a strong ratings draw. "The Voice Kids" concluded last July 27 with a nationwide viewership of 37.2%. Its penultimate episode on July 26 scored its highest rating of 37.7%, according to ABS-CBN in an earlier press statement.

Gairanod's "Maalaala Mo Kaya" episode also dominated conversations online. Its official hashtag, #MMKLyca, became the No. 1 trending topic in the Philippines and worldwide on Twitter during its telecast.

After her TV drama debut, Gairanod is set to join the cast of the Vice Ganda-starrer "Praybeyt Benjamin 2," according to director Wenn Deramas. The comedy movie will compete at this year's Metro Manila Film Festival.

Meanwhile, Enchong Dee and Pokwang will play mother and son who are forced to make ends meet for their family in the upcoming "MMK" episode that will air this Saturday.

“MMK” airs every Saturday, 8 p.m., after “Wansapanataym” on ABS-CBN. is the news website of ABS-CBN.
