MANILA – Broadway star Lea Salonga went against the choice of her fellow judges on “The Voice of the Philippines” and picked Filipino-American R&B singer RJ Dela Fuente as the battle rounds of the hit talent competition continued on Sunday.

Salonga selected Dela Fuente, kundiman singer Juvie Pelos and Bulacan singer Rainier Acosta for a three-way battle and gave the contestants the Motown classic “What’s Going On” by Marvin Gaye.

Both rocker Bamboo Manalac and Black Eyed Peas’ apl.de.ap thought Pelos won the battles.

“Juvie, you were the fire. You were burning the stage up,” Bamboo said, while apl thought both Pelos and Acosta stood out before picking the lone female contestant among the three as the winner.

Apl thought Dela Fuente was “holding back,” while Bamboo said the Fil-Am contestant should have stepped up.

But Gerard Salonga, who is assisting his sister in advising her team, thought otherwise, picking Dela Fuente for “staying true to the music,” noting that a song like the Marvin Gaye classic should not be overpowered.

Lea Salonga agreed with her brother. “Juvie, parang sumobra ka lang. Rainier, it became a little more about you than about the song,” she said. “For this battle round, it’s yours, RJ.”
