MANILA — Kris Aquino confirmed on Thursday that Derek Ramsay is no longer part of the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) entry “(K)ampon.”

On Instagram, Aquino said Ramsay is contract artist of GMA Network, which she noted has had a “long partnership” with Quantum Films, the production company behind the film.

According to Aquino, Ramsay is “like a son” to the founder of Atty. Joji Alonso, the founder of Quantum Films.

“This led to arguments between Atty. Joji and myself because I felt like the ‘Ampon’ since many adjustments were being made for [Derek],” she said, tagging Ramsay’s Instagram account.

“Derek and I have spoken. We go way back, 2004-2005 when we did our San Miguel Beer TVC. Nagkasagutan pero dahil may pinagsamahan, nagkaunawaan. I respect that he has a GMA Network contract that should be his top priority. Chill kami,” she said.

Aquino did not detail the reason behind Ramsay’s exit.

She then confirmed that Gabby Concepcion has replaced Ramsay in the project, and expressed gratitude to the screen veteran as well as his manager, Popoy Caritativo.

“MMFF rules state change of lead stars should be of equal status. Had Gabby said no, wala ng movie, goodbye sa MMFF bond, sa preprod cost, sa mga downpayment etc. From my whole heart, thank you,” she said.

Aquino also pointed out that she is a co-investor in the film, along with Cornerstone, which manages her showbiz career, and Spring Films. “Kaya po financially, intellectually, and emotionally invested,” she added.

Among Aquino’s inputs in the project, she shared, was casting actor-politician Herbert Bautista, who for a time was romantically linked with her. That, however, did not push through.

Aquino admitted she was “insensitive” for having sent to Bautista a copy of the script, which included a love scene between the characters she and Concepcion will portray.

“In my mind, friends na kami pero totoo naman, sa isip niyo siya ang huli niyong alam na naging ‘boyfriend’ ko. Hindi naman kayo witness sa naging magandang closure namin at hindi niyo alam na we openly share how proud we are about our respective children’s achievements. Kung alam ninyo ‘yun, no issue. But we chose to protect the friendship by keeping details private.

“Kaya nu’ng nag-no siya because he didn’t want to be part of the ‘gulo,’ una na hurt at nagalit ako. Pero after praying, I understood. Nilagay ko ang sarili ko in his place. Kaya alam ko, I was asking for much. We’re not okay now, but hopefully in time we can be friends again,” she said.
