MANILA - Former TV host Kris Aquino on Saturday took to social media to thank President Rodrigo Duterte for "acknowledging" who was behind the murder of her father, former Sen. Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino.
"Thank you for acknowledging our family’s loss, and who was behind it. Salamat, Mr. President," Aquino said in a series of tweets.
Aquino made the remark after President Rodrigo Duterte said her mother Cory only became popular after losing her husband "in the hands of Mr. Marcos."
"Cory Aquino may be popular. She is popular today. Why? For losing the husband in the hands of Mr. Marcos," Duterte said in a speech in Davao City last Friday.
The assassination of Ninoy Aquino triggered the 1986 EDSA Revolution that toppled the 20-year dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos and catapulted Cory Aquino to the presidency.
Kris Aquino, in a Twitter thread, said she still "admires" Duterte's "authenticity."
The tweet was accompanied by a video composed of her parent's photos, including TIME Magazine covers of Cory, along with "Tie a Yellow Ribbon" as background music, which the actress said was her father's favorite.
Duterte is known to be close to the Marcos family, as his late father Vicente served in the late strongman's pre-martial law cabinet. In November 2016, Duterte allowed Ferdinand Marcos' burial at the hallowed Libingan ng mga Bayani despite protests.
In 2018, Duterte admitted that it was Cory who jump-started his career in politics. He was appointed as officer-in-charge vice mayor in Davao City, where he later served as mayor for 22 years.
Duterte also said his mother Soledad was among Aquino’s original supporters in Davao City.
Kris Aquino earlier said she is willing to meet the Marcoses halfway, in light of Sen. Imee Marcos’ “dilawan” outfit at Duterte’s 4th State of the Nation Address.
