It may seem odd for someone whose career began in the 1980s to be nominated for an award usually handed to emerging artists.
But such is the case with Kapamilya actor Ian Veneracion, by now a household name in local showbiz, as his foray into music last year earned him a nod for Best Performance by a New Male Recording Artist category of the 2018 Awit Awards.
He expressed his gratitude for the nomination this Thursday on Instagram, posting a short video where he admitted that he's flattered and flashed a smile as he mentioned the word "new."
"Nakaka-bagets, love it. Thank you so much and see you guys soon!" he told his fans.
Veneracion is nominated for his rendition of Jose Mari Chan's 1973 song "Refrain," released back in January 2017 under Star Music. It was his first-ever single in his decades-long career.
In an interview before his concert in May, he explained why it took him this long to venture into music, despite his passion for playing instruments and composing: "Nobody asked."
Veneracion is competing with former "The Voice of the Philippines" contestants RJ dela Fuente and Jem Cubil, and other new artists such as Nar Cabico and Joseph Santos.
The 2018 Awit Awards was originally scheduled for this August, but was postponed until October 14. It will be held at the Kia Theatre in Cubao, Quezon City.
