MANILA — For the first time on television, Sarah Geronimo on Sunday performed her single “Ganito,” about how to not lose a woman in a relationship.
Geronimo took the “ASAP Natin ‘To” stage with songwriter Nica del Rosario, with whom she collaborated to pen the track from her 2018 album “This 15 Me.”
“Ganito,” according to del Rosario, is a song about how to keep one’s partner — the result of a brainstorming session with Geronimo, herself in a long-term relationship with actor Matteo Guidicelli.
Del Rosario initially proposed they write about how one end’s up losing a partner, as inspired by a Thought Catalog article, but to Geronimo the message came across as “sad and nega.”
“What if daw baliktad — instead of ‘this is how you lose her’, gawin naming ‘this is how you don’t’?” del Rosario shared on Twitter last year.
“We started exchanging thoughts and insights on loving someone. It was a fruitful discussion, and being in a committed relationship also, we agreed with each other's beliefs and opinions,” del Rosario wrote.
Given a pen to “write all of her thoughts, no limits, no holding back,” Geronimo ended up pouring her insights on having a healthy relationship on a piece of paper “back-to-back, single-spaced,” del Rosario recalled.
“The next day I picked up my guitar and studied her written insights. Sentences, metaphors, even random phrases. They were earnest and sincere and wonderfully passionate. ‘Kaya mo ba siyang samahan sa madilim niyang mundo?’, she wrote. That was my favorite,” del Rosario said.
“Sarah is definitely something special,” the songwriter went on. “There’s a reason why she's where she is right now. Minsan nakakalimutan kong siya si Sarah Geronimo. I will always be thankful for the opportunity to keep working with her.”
