Dan Ombao had promise.
His unmistakable talent, which he successfully showcased despite a losing effort in "The Voice of the Philippines" in 2014, led to him getting a first taste of the ever-coveted fame pie: gigs, television guestings, and collabs with other artists --he was well on his way to achieving his dream of becoming a famous singer.
But admittedly, Ombao let all of it go to his head.
Opportunities, he said, eventually slipped away one by one and he was left with nothing but feelings of deep regret.
His determination to never repeat these mistakes was what led him to audition for "Idol Philippines," where he blew the judges away with his moving rendition of Join The Club's "Nobela."
After that, he rarely made a wrong step in his journey to the grand finals. He should be a favorite going into the weekend but, like when he faced Jason Dy in "The Voice," the biggest stumbling block he faces is cruelly simple: more popular contestants.
Though who knows? One does not need to tell Ombao --a man looking to erase the mistakes of his past-- to make his final turn on the "Idol" stage count, to give a performance without regret.
But before he does so, here's a look back at his "Idol" journey:
