MANILA -- In celebration of its 20th anniversary, ABS-CBN's film production outfit Star Cinema will release in local cinemas the Mario Maurer-starrer "Pee Mak," which broke records early this year to become the all-time highest grossing movie in Thailand.

Produced by GTH Productions in Thailand and directed Banjong Pisanthanakun, "Pee Mak" will be distributed by Star Cinema in the Philippines, where it will open on August 28.

The horror-comedy film is a take on the famous Thai folk tale about Mae Nak (Davike Hoome), a woman who, beyond death, continues to make her love felt by her clueless husband, Pee Mak (Maurer).

Released in Thailand on March 28, "Pee Mak" earned US$33 million with 10 million tickets sold nationwide to become the country's highest grossing film of all time.

"Pee Mak" is among Star Cinema's film offerings as part of its year-long 20th anniversary celebration.

The ABS-CBN film outfit has earlier released the family "dramedy," "Four Sisters and a Wedding," and the black comedy film, "Tuhog," to kick off the celebration.

Other films slated to be released by Star Cinema this year include the romantic-comedy movie "Bakit Hindi Ka Crush ng Crush Mo?", which hits theaters on July 31, and the Vilma Santos-starrer, "Ekstra."
