MANILA—The stakes have never been higher as this week, as it turns out, is the final hurdle that the 6 remaining hopefuls need to jump to get into the grand finals of "Idol Philippines."
Only one will be eliminated before the "Final Showdown" next week --and to help determine that, they were asked to perform their chosen song from Gary Valenciano's discography.
Ella Ocampo was up third and she put her own spin on the classic "Sana Maulit Muli" to mixed results.
Both Vice Ganda and Regine Velasquez were in agreement that the style she tried did not quite fit the highly emotional tune.
Velasquez explained that she's extra critical of her cover because she has her own version of "Sana Maulit Muli," meaning that she, too, studied it and its intended meaning.
"Nababawasan iyong bilib ko sa iyo," Velasquez, in saying that she didn't want to lie to Ocampo, frankly said.
Vice Ganda praised the high level of musicality first, but added that the changes Ocampo made were too "distracting."
Moira dela Torre, however, loved it, saying that Ocampo never fails to make her emotional. "You're not the strongest vocally, but iyong emotional connection mo napalakas. I feel your songs."
Hosted by Billy Crawford, "Idol Philippines" airs Saturdays after "Home Sweetie Home" and Sundays after "Wansapanataym."
