MANILA – Lea Salonga called on her followers to say a prayer for ABS-CBN employees, whose jobs are on the line after the denial of the network’s franchise application last July 10.
This after the broadcast giant officially announced Wednesday that it would cease the operations of some of its businesses and lay off workers effective August 31, 2020.
“Please say a prayer for the many men and women of ABS-CBN as well as their families, that they weather what might possibly be the biggest challenge of their lives. Mahigpit na yakap, mga Kapamilya,’ Salonga said in a tweet.
In another post, the “The Voice” coach said it is immaterial at this point “whether you were in favor of the shutdown or not.”
“Pray for them anyway. To be suddenly out of a job is not something to wish upon another human being, especially in the middle of this seemingly never-ending pandemic,” she said.
In a statement 5 days after the House committee on legislative franchises denied the media and entertainment company a new 25-year franchise, ABS-CBN said retrenching workers was the "only way to ensure the continued employment" of the rest of its employees.
ABS-CBN did not give a figure on how many would be laid off.
However, it said that the company would be "paying out separation and retirement benefits and providing job placement programs."
