MANILA — Team Philippines is taking home 286 awards, including a category champion title, from the just-concluded World Championship of Performing Arts competition held in Long Beach, California.

Eighty-seven Filipino delegates joined the annual competition, which has junior and senior divisions, spanning several categories, including dance, instruments, vocals, modelling, and acting.

Filipino guitar duo M Squared was named senior grand champion in the instrumentalists category.

Overall, the senior grand champion of the world was Cayman Islands representative Rita Estevanovich, from the acting category.

The title of junior grand champion of the world, meanwhile, went to Stefan Ogilvie of South Africa, also from the acting category.

In total, the Philippines' representatives won 55 gold medals, 83 silver medals, 81 bronze medals, 34 division champion plaques, and 33 semi-finalist badges, according to the local organizer's official Facebook page.

Notably, Mau Marcelo, the first-ever "Philippine Idol" winner, was among the medalists. She got bronze for her jazz performance ("Sweet Love") in the vocal soloists category, and silver for her contemporary performance ("This Is My Life").

Kapamilya balladeer Jed Madela, the 2005 grand champion of the world, accompanied the Filipino delegates this year as coach, with national director Gerry Mercado, and creative director Annie Mercado.

Team Philippines will arrive home on July 25.
