MANILA -- Jennylyn Mercado called out those rejoicing lawmakers' decision to vote against the renewal of ABS-CBN's franchise, which ensured that the network stays off the air and has placed thousands of jobs at risk in the middle of a pandemic.

Mercado, whose shows air on ABS-CBN's rival, GMA-7, described these people as "cruel" in a Facebook post, put up hours after a House committee assessed ABS-CBN to be undeserving of a franchise.

Rejoicing because of other people’s sorrow is not only wrong, but inhumane."

"You are cruel."

The actress also argued against those insisting that the "law is the law," harking back at how violations made by public officials during the quarantine period went unpunished.

"If you say that then everyone should be held at the same standard," she said.

She added: "Huwag muna tayo mag mananita.

"Will pray for everyone to be enlightened and to remember the values that make us human...

"Please be kind to one another. Thank you."

Mercado joined a chorus of celebrities in condemning the House committee verdict to block the renewal of ABS-CBN, amidst concerns about media freedom under President Rodrigo Duterte.
