MANILA, Philippines - Actress-TV host Kris Aquino is taking a three-week vacation in the United States after announcing her impending separation from her husband, pro-basketball player James Yap.
Aquino said she and her two children, Joshua and Baby James, will be staying in Orlando, Florida for 3 weeks. Among the tourist spots they will be visiting is the Disney World resort.
The controversial TV host said she would likely miss the State of the Nation Address of her brother, President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III, on July 26.
She added, however, that she will return to the Philippines in time for the death anniversary of her mother, former president Cory Aquino, on August 1.
Aquino was interviewed by ABS-CBN's North America News Bureau while waiting for her connecting flight at the Los Angeles International Airport. She refused to answer questions about the status of her relationship with Yap.
Aquino and her two children left the Philippines Thursday evening on board a Philippine Air Lines 10 p.m. flight bound for Los Angeles.
Kris and her party were able to evade the media with the help of airport authorities who let them in the airport through the tarmac and into the presidential lounge instead of through the passenger entrance gates. The president's sister and her companions stayed in the presidential lounge for almost 2 hours before entering the plane through gate 49 of terminal 2.
Kris announced on June 27 that she was separating from her husband after six years of marriage.
James, on the other hand, has said he wants to give their marriage another chance.
Kris also quipped during the election campaign that she would leave the Philippines if her brother won the presidential elections in order to spare him from controversy.
Among those who assisted Kris and her party at the terminal were the new airport general manager Angel Honrado, NAIA terminal 2 manager Atty. Butch Bautista, and airport media affairs chief Consuelo Bungag.
Husband James was nowhere to be seen at the airport. With a report from Joseph Pimentel, ABS-CBN North America News Bureau
