A possessive Maleficent ignites a war with the kingdom of her daughter’s betrothed, as seen in the new trailer for Disney’s reimagining of the iconic villain from “Sleeping Beauty.”
In the trailer released on Monday, the titular role portrayed by Angelina Jolie is shown wary of Aurora’s (Elle Fanning) engagement to Prince Phillip (Harris Dickinson), in light of her own bitter history in love.
She, however, yields to Aurora’s request to meet the prince’s family. Her distrust of the queen, Ingrith (Michelle Pfeiffer), results in further friction.
Maleficent unleashes her fiery powers upon the threat of Aurora being taken from her, but her possessiveness only pushes her adopted daughter away.
In a full-scale war between Maleficent’s realm and Ingrith’s kingdom, Aurora sides with the latter.
Defeated and seemingly with no family, Maleficent then appears being nursed to recovery by creatures who look similar to her — horned and with wings.
“Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” is scheduled for release in October.
