MANILA — The mother of an evicted “Pinoy Big Brother” housemate has apologized to host Melai Cantiveros after what’s been described as her “rude” behavior during a live interview that aired Saturday and which has since gone viral online.
In the July 6 episode of the reality show, Rowena Cariaga appeared emotional as Cantiveros asked for her reaction after the announcement of public votes, which resulted in the eviction of her daughter Diana Mackey.
Cariaga, at least to viewers, was dismissive of Cantiveros, and appeared to push the host away before walking out of the interview.
Various uploads of the interaction made the rounds on social media over the weekend, drawing ire from netizens who referred to Cariaga’s treatment of Cantiveros as “disrespectful.”
Cantiveros’ co-host Bianca Gonzalez was among the first from “Pinoy Big Brother” to directly address the incident.
“She was just being a mom,” Gonzalez replied to a tweet from a follower who expressed disappointment. “Mahirap talaga kasi syempre pa-Big Four na tapos dun pa na-evict.. Iba-iba din talaga tayo ng way ng pag-express ng disappointment o lungkot. Melai did so well.”
Gonzalez was referring to the final four housemates from Mackey’s batch, who will then share the house with the previous three, Big Four batches leading up to the convergence of an ultimate Big Four.
On Instagram on Monday, Cantiveros shared with her followers that Cariaga has apologized. She posted a screenshot of Cariaga’s message in a Facebook group dedicated to Mackey.
First thanking the supporters of her daughter, Cariaga then addressed Cantiveros to say sorry. She explained that it was not her intention to push Cantiveros. While admittedly emotional over the eviction of Mackey, she insisted she was not angry.
“Kung hindi man naging magandang ang dating sa iba, paumanhin po lalo na kay Ms. Melai,” she wrote.
Cantiveros, in her Instagram post, meanwhile thanked her fans who expressed concern and gave her encouragement in light of the viral interview.
“Pero ako na nagsasabi na ‘di naman ako nasaktan, at naintindihan ko ang pinagdaanan ng mama ni Diana,” she said. “Huwag na natin i-judge si Mami at magmahalan na lang tayo.”
In fact, Cantiveros shared, she and Cariaga shared a hug after the interview as she sought to comfort her.
Mackey similarly apologized to Cantiveros, through a comment on the comedienne’s Instagram post about Cariaga.
“Maraming salamat, Ate Melai, for understanding,” Mackey wrote. “Sorry po again in behalf of my mom. She would never intend to hurt anyone especially you kasi she admires you so much even before pa. Take care always, Ate Melai, and may God bless you more!”
