MANILA — Talent manager Angeli Pangilinan, the wife of music icon Gary Valenciano, attested to the generosity of ABS-CBN as an employer on Tuesday, amid the House hearing on its franchise.

In a series of tweets, Pangilinan reacted to proceedings where the labor practices of ABS-CBN were scrutinized.

"Do our govt officials have the right to shame bosses of a company that has won hundreds of awards including Best Employer in ASIA?" she wrote.

In 2019 alone, ABS-CBN was named an outstanding employer in the Philippine Best Employer Brand Awards, and was recognized for outstanding corporate governance by the ASEAN Corporate Governance Scorecard.

Noting that Valenciano has been "a contractor [of ABS-CBN] for 17 years," Pangilinan recalled that "when we had a bypass, they were there also helping us financially even if Gary was not an employee."

Pangilinan was referring to Valenciano's heart surgery in 2018. In the same year, Valenciano was diagnosed and subsequently cleared of kidney cancer.

Pangilinan, in a subsequent tweet, acknowledged that "all companies have many problems and cases that they encounter in the course of doing business."

"He who has no sin as a company, cast the first stone. We have a very slow judicial system too. But does the problem of a group that has been settled merit thousands losing their jobs?"

Pangilinan's comments came as the government ordered the further shutdown of ABS-CBN's other broadcast platforms, TVPlus and SKYdirect.

This, only a month after ABS-CBN was ordered to halt its free-TV and radio broadcast, affecting the job security of some 11,000 employees amid a pandemic that's already impacted industries and livelihood.
