MANILA - After damaging her spine to the point wherein doctors started throwing the word paralysis, one could understand Angel Locsin's reluctance to embrace the fan clamor for her to snatch back the role of "Darna" from the grip of uncertainty.
Since Locsin decided to leave the project that aimed to reintroduce the Filipina superheroine to a new generation of Pinoys due to the disc bulge in her spine, several names have been thrown in the pool of possible replacements.
Jessy Mendiola. Nadine Lustre. Liza Soberano. Arci Muñoz. Anne Curtis. Nearly every Filipina actress that fit the iconic costume were suggested. Yet, none of them seem to inspire confidence outside their own fanbase.
It also doesn't help that Locsin has not ruled out the possibility of her returning to the project. "Kung ibibigay sa akin, eh para sa akin," she reiterated in an interview on Wednesday, further fueling fan belief that a recasting announcement may not be a far-fetched dream.
According to Locsin, her road to recovery has been smooth. Following her surgery, she is scheduled to return to Singapore in September for further assessment and see if she will be allowed to start doing some of her old pastimes like running, hiking, and biking.
"Sobrang bored ako ngayon because I miss my old routine," Locsin admitted. "Siguro dahil nasanay ako sa intense ay nami-miss ko lang gawin. Pero iyon ang goal ko talaga eh, pag nagawa ko na siya ulit, ibig sabihin I'm okay na."
As of writing, Star Cinema has refrained in making any casting announcements. The film's director has also opted to move on to a new project for the time being instead of pushing for "Darna" to continue production.
Still, regardless on whether she will again take flight as Darna, Locsin maintained that she will be happy with the decision. "Kung hindi ako, eh baka hindi talaga para sa akin," she said.
