MANILA, Philippines – Independent film director Rafael Santos has drawn flak after revealing the reasons why he chooses theater actors to star in his short movies.

In an interview with ANC’s “Cityscape” on Friday, Santos said he usually gets theater actors because he “personally find[s] the theater actors are better to work with because they don’t complain.”

“You can feed them Skyflakes 3 meals a day and pay them in cat food basically,” he said.

“They’re never late. They cry when you want them to cry. Other actors kasi you have to hit them first. So that’s why I like working with theater people,” Santos added.

These remarks of Santos irked a number of netizens and took to the microblogging site Twitter their frustration toward the filmmaker.

User gibbscadiz, whose tweet has been retweeted for more than 20 times, said: “[T]heater actors are ideal for indies because you can feed them Skyflakes and cat food? that's just dumb and tasteless, RAFAEL SANTOS.”

Andrea_Mago tweeted: “Wow, that Rafael Santos guy came off as arrogant. :| Regardless of what he said, it was all in the way he talked. Napaka condescending naman.”

Twitter user jaketor posted: “as a catlover, i am offended with the statement of Rafael "Rafa" Santos..buti na lang di ako theater actor kundi nakapatay na ako ng tao.”

Santos is the director of the short film “Samarito,” which is an entry in this year’s Cinemalaya Film Festival.
