MANILA -- Even though veteran actor Eddie Garcia requested for his remains to be quickly cremated and for his family to forego a wake, a public viewing was still held in his honor.

The 3-day memorial at Heritage Park in Taguig became an opportunity for fans of Garcia to connect with him one last time.

Nestor Daracan, a retired army and police sergeant, played a farewell tune for Garcia entitled "Paalam" to an informal audience at the final night of the wake Saturday.

Garcia's partner Lilibeth Romero and stepson Mikee Romero joined visitors that included Garcia's fellow actors in swaying or clapping along.

His lyrics end with the line "I hope you are happy now" in Filipino.

Daracan said the folk-like song was adapted with lyrics for Garcia from tunes he played at funerals for friends back in Tuao, Cagayan province.

The 67-year-old event singer described Garcia as a "kumpadre," having shared a godchild with the actor for a colleague when Daracan was assigned to the Presidential Security Group.

"We saw each other in the years after, but I saw what happened to him on TV and decided to come here to offer a song," he said.

Other fans of the actor who came to the wake were treated to a free big-screen showing of his recent films "Rainbow's Sunset" and "Hintayan ng Langit" at an adjacent room in the funeral home.

Still, it was enough for other fans to simply see Garcia's urn and take photos of it as keepsakes, even if they traveled a long way.

Francisco Joseco, 61, commuted alone from Pangasinan for a selfie with Garcia's urn.

He said he was a fan of both Garcia and action king Fernando Poe Jr., with whom Garcia co-starred in numerous films as the villain.

Joseco said he only got to see Garcia in person from afar, at parades for the Metro Manila Film Festival.

"Many more wanted to come from my neighborhood, but backed out when they learned Eddie would be cremated and they would no longer see him," he said.

"I still went since I wanted to say goodbye to him."

The public viewing will last until 6 p.m. Sunday, after which family and close friends will hold a private Mass before taking Garcia's urn home.

While the fans who paid their respects did not find a casket, they instead saw acting trophies and images of the actor taken in his prime, with poses that matched the "kontrabidas" he often portrayed.

This is the 'Manoy' his family and fans would like most to remember: strong and never shirking from a role, whether on or off-screen.
