‘Mahal ka namin’: Coco Martin mourns Eddie Garcia’s death, ‘Probinsyano’ airs tribute

MANILA — “FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano,” which saw the last television appearance of Eddie Garcia in a starring role, paid tribute to the late screen icon on Thursday, hours after his passing.

Garcia, 90, had portrayed the nemesis of Cardo (Coco Martin), Don Emilio and later under the guise of Senor Gustavo, between 2016 and 2019.

During the primetime series’ June 20 airing on ABS-CBN, a compilation of memorable moments of Garcia in “Ang Probinsyano” was shown.

“Mahabang panahon ang ating pinagsamahan. Hindi ka namin makakalimutan. Isa kang tunay na ka-Probinsyano. Mahal ka namin, Kapamilya,” the tribute read.

On Instagram, Martin, who is also one of the director of “Ang Probsinyano,” mourned the passing of the screen veteran whom he had endearingly called “Lo.”

Martin wrote, unedited: “Diko mapaliwanag ang lungkot at sakit nanararamdaman namin ngayon. iniisip ko nalang po na ang Diyos ang may kagustuhan ng lahat ng nangyayari para sa atin. Maraming salamat sayo Lo sa lahat ng ating mga kwentuhan at tawanan at sa ating mga masasayang mga oras na magkasama. 

“Malayo man ang edad natin pero tinanggap mo ako bilang kaibigan mo. Hanggang sa muling pagkikita natin Lo mabuhay ka at alam ko nandito kalang sinusubaybayan mo kami. hindi namin kakalimutan ang lahat ng mga pangaral mo para sa amin isakang huwaran ng mabuting tao at mahusay na artista at direktor Mahal na mahal ka namin Lo!!! R.I.P”

The casting of Garcia in “Ang Probinsyano” harkened back to earlier decades in his career when he portrayed the villain to the late Fernando Poe, Jr., whose film of the same title inspired the ABS-CBN series.
