CALIFORNIA -- In honor of Philippine Independence Day, San Diego Filipino American City councilman Chris Cate led a virtual celebration where he presented Arnel Pineda with a proclamation.
“The city of San Diego is honored to recognize prominent Filipinos such as Arnel Pineda that has contributed so much to our society,” said Cate.
Pineda spoke with many of San Diego’s high-ranking Fil-Am community members, recalling his fondness for San Diego, where he performed multiple times throughout his career.
“It’s like a very upscale version of Manila, and then with beautiful coastline, the beaches. I love it,” he said.
The proclamation cites the Journey lead singer’s humanitarian contributions and ability to inspire Filipinos around the world.
Earlier this week, Pineda wrote and released “Your Soldiers," a song dedicated to frontliners fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.
“That song was accidental. I was just in my room thinking about how great our frontliners are around the world, trying to fight the dreaded virus. I was just so amazed how dedicated they are. I’m just so touched they are willing to sacrifice their own lives,” he said.
And while the COVID-19 pandemic has cancelled the rest of Journey’s tour this year, Pineda said he looks forward to eventually making his way back to San Diego where his new friends have invited him for a real-life celebration.
