MANILA — A UK-based distributor has acquired the international rights to an upcoming Brillante Mendoza movie, a report said.
According to Screen Daily, London’s SC Films International has purchased Mendoza’s “Gensan Punch,” about the true story of a Japanese man with an artificial leg and his rise to fame as a boxer in General Santos City, the hometown of Manny Pacquiao.
The new film stars Japanese actor Shogen (“Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist,” “Death Note”) alongside Ronnie Lazaro, Beauty Gonzales and Kaho Minami, and will feature scenes not only set in the Philippines, but also in Okinawa and Fukuoka in Japan.
It is a co-production by local movie studio Center Stage Productions ("Mindanao") and Japan’s Gentle Underground Monkeys.
Screen Daily's report added that as part of the deal with SC Films International initial footage of “Gensan Punch” will be shown at the upcoming virtual Cannes market, set to run from June 22 to 26.
The movie is scheduled to wrap up filming next month, with plans to start screening it by the end of the year.
“Gensan Punch” is Mendoza’s first sports biopic.
