MANILA -- Filipino veteran actor Eddie Garcia is still in a coma and continues to be in critical condition at the Makati Medical Center where he is being treated after an on-set accident over the weekend, the hospital's spokesperson said on Tuesday.
"Mr. Garcia continues to be in critical condition. He is in a comatose state with minimal spontaneous respiration," Dr. Artemio Salvador, Patient Relations Department Division Head of the Makati Medical Center, said in a statement.
A spokesman for Garcia's family later confirmed with DZMM that the actor is in life support, and added that they are "very overwhelmed" with the love the actor has been receiving.
Garcia, 90, sustained a neck fracture injury after tripping and falling down while shooting a TV series for GMA Network last June 8. He was first taken to the Mary Johnston Hospital for treatment before being transferred to the Makati Medical Center Sunday.
Tuesday's update was the first issued by the Makati Medical Center since putting the actor on a 48-hour "critical observation" watch to see if his condition improves.
It also comes after GMA Network said that it will be investigating the reason behind the lack of a medical team on-set.
"GMA Network is deeply saddened with what happened to Mr. Eddie Garcia and the management is committed to getting to the bottom of this unfortunate incident," the network added.
