MANILA – Actress Mercedes Cabral, dubbed as Philippine cinema’s “Indie Princess,” is captivating audiences in the Middle East as she stars in a Kuwaiti soap opera.
Cabral is the lead actress of “Saq Al-bambu” (The Bamboo Stalk), which tells the story of a Filipino maid working in Kuwait.
The show is produced by Sabbah Pictures and is being aired in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Dubai and other parts of the Middle East.
It will run for the whole month of Ramadan.
Cabral’s manager, Shandii Bacolod, shared clips of scenes showing Cabral in “Saq Al-bambu” on Facebook.
Kuwaiti netizens also took to social media to praise Cabral’s performance in “Saq Al-bambu,” with one even comparing her looks to popular model Gigi Hadid.
“This episode of Saq Al-Bamboo highlighting Filipino actress and MSB artist Mercedes Cabral is making noise on social media!” Bacolod wrote.
Aside from Cabral, other Filipino actors in “Saq Al-bambu” include Maria Isabel Lopez – who was a scene-stealer at the recently held Cannes Film Festival – as well as Lou Veloso, Lilia Cuntapay, Ana Abad Santos, Sue Prado and Rhen Escaño.
Cabral is one of the nominees for Best Actress in the 2016 Gawad Urian Awards scheduled on June 22 at the KIA Theater.
The actress, which stars in the movie “Da Dog Show”, is competing with Nora Aunor (“Taklub”), Alessandra de Rossi (“Bambanti”) and Jennylyn Mercado (“Walang Forever”), among others, for the award.
