MANILA, Philippines – Kris Aquino on Sunday broke her silence on talks about the possible appointment of television personality and close friend Boy Abunda as Secretary of the Department of Tourism (DoT).
Kris, youngest sister of president-apparent Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, confessed that it was she who suggested to her older brother to appoint Abunda as DoT secretary, citing the television host’s “marketing capabilities,” among other things.
“If anybody is to blame, it's me. I was the one who brought it up with Noy. I was the one who brought it up with Boy, not realizing naman it would cause such a major [issue], front page, 3 araw na deretso,” she said.
Aside from Abunda’s “marketing capabilities,” Kris said she was also impressed by her co-host’s love for his countrymen, especially those living in the provinces.
“And most importantly, I’ve dealt with Boy with so many money matters. And kung meron kang ire-rekomenda para sa gobyerno, gusto mo ‘yong taong mapagkakatiwalaan mo, na hindi mangungurakot and protective at aalagaan ang presidente,” she added.
She also urged Abunda, also a talent manager, to accept the position.
She said: “Tutal naman you're getting all these flak, and tutal naman na alam nating lahat na malaki ang maco-contribute mo para sa Pilipinas, go for it Boy… I’m sorry if I was the cause of all of these.”
Late last month, Noynoy announced that he was eyeing Abunda, a close friend of his family, to head the DoT. He took note of “The Buzz” host’s ability to clearly communicate ideas and understand the audience.
"He is an icon in the country, and more so for his ability to communicate, to understand the audience and to be able to propound and advance a particular set of ideas,” Noynoy said.
Abunda initially was “not inclined” to any government position, but he later changed his mind. He said he is not closing his doors to the possibility of serving the Aquino administration, but not “while I am under contract with ABS-CBN."
