MANILA – ABS-CBN chief content officer Charo Santos-Concio confirmed on Sunday that she will be appearing in a movie directed by “Hele sa Hiwagang Hapis” filmmaker Lav Diaz.
“Yes, it’s true. I just finished a movie with Lav Diaz,” she said, adding that the movie’s title is “Ang Babaeng Humayo.”
Concio said Diaz approached her after he won the Silver Bear Alfred Bauer Prize at the 2016 Berlin Film Festival last February to ask if she is still willing to go back to acting.
“I said, ‘Yes, why not? If there’s a good offer, if there’s an interesting character.’ Two days after that talk, he sent me a script. Nung binasa ko, nagustuhan ko siya,” she said.
Speaking to ABS-CBN News in a separate interview, Concio, who is also the president of ABS-CBN University, admitted that she missed working in front of the camera because it has been years since she last acted on screen.
Her last movie was "Alfredo Lim: Batas ng Maynila," which was released in 1995.
“Nung bumalik ako sabi ko it's nice to be back on the field. It's nice to see it naman from the perspective of a person facing the cameras. Iba naman ang challenge kasi you breathe life to the character. Instead of looking at the logistics, production requirements, cash flows, pagtatrabahuhan mo naman ang character mo. Aalamin mo, kikilalanin mo siya at bibigyang buhay mo siya,” she said.
Asked to describe her working experience with Diaz, Concio said: “I was so honored to have been approached by the Lav Diaz. I didn't even think twice about it after I read the material. I had a discussion with him about the character, his expectations. I also discussed my apprehensions. I told him, 'I feel so scared but at the same time excited so it must be the right feeling.'”
Concio’s co-stars in the film have yet to be named. However, it was announced that the movie will be part of this year’s Cinema One Film Festival.
To keep the element of surprise, Concio’s sister, Star Creatives COO Malou Santos, teased that the viewers will definitely see “a new Charo” in the movie. “Magugulat kayo sa role na ginampanan niya,” she said.
More details about the film will be announced in July.
Meanwhile, Concio said she is still undecided about going back to acting full time.
“I just go with the flow. I don’t really plan it. Parang whatever the universe offers, if my heart and my gut think it’s the right thing to do and I will have fun and I will have a great adventure, then I’m open to it. It’s not like a conscious decision na, ‘Ito na, magfu-full time acting na ako.’ I really just go with the flow,” she said.
