MANILA - Actress Carmina Villarroel came to the defense of her husband, Zoren Legaspi, after his accountant Flora Capili admitted that the actor has four tax identification numbers (TIN).
Under the National Internal Revenue Code (NIRC), posessing more than one TIN is prohibited because it may be used to evade payment of correct taxes.
Villaroel issued a statement through Kris Aquino on "Aquino & Abunda Tonight", Wednesday evening.
"Carmina wanted to say, gusto lang nilang sabihin, na i-stress na hindi alam ni Zoren na he had multiple-TINs at multiple-TINs ang ginagamit. Pangalawa, gusto niyang ipaalam sa mga tao that he has only been using one TIN and that they are very grateful to Assistant Prosecutor Atty. Stewart Allan Mariano for helping and guiding Zoren," Aquino said.
"Ang parang gusto nilang i-emphasize talaga na hindi sinabi yung apat (TINs), hindi sinabi ng accountant nila," Aquino added.
Capili had said that while Legaspi is paying his taxes, there were "discrepancies" in filling it.
Mariano gave Legaspi up to June 6 to submit his counter-affidavit and be represented by counsel.
The next hearing on the case will also be on June 6, at 10 a.m.
In its complaint, the BIR alleged that Legaspi underdeclared his income for taxable years 2010 and 2012 by declaring only P6.79 million in 2010, and P1.82 million in 2012. This was compared to the alpha lists of withholding agents, which showed Legaspi received total income of P9.64 million in 2010 (underdeclaration of 42%), and P6.49 million in 2012 (underdeclaration of 256%).
Legaspi earlier expressed his willingness to cooperate in the investigation.
