MANILA - Iconic child stars topbill ABS-CBN's latest special feature on the history of the rise of nymphets of Philippine cinema and television on the award-winning entertainment documentary "Biyaheng Retro," airing on Jeepney TV on Sunday, May 24.
Child wonders Niño Muhlach and Aiza Seguerra lead the roster of young stars who recall their beginnings and glory days as top showbiz attractions in the 70s and 80s.
Industry veterans and psychologists also explain the cultural phenomenon of child stars through the years.
Also, one of the intriguing points in the documentary is Muhlach's revelation that his family sought medical assistance for his stunted growth as a teenager. Diminutive height is a common denominator among former child performers.
Muhlach said doctors confirmed that glaring lights on the set directly affected his growth and pituitary gland.
Hosted by ABS-CBN news correspondent Mario Dumaual and "Forevermore" star Sofia Andres, the documentary also features Vilma Santos, Roderick Paulate, Matet de Leon, Katya Santos, Serena Dalrymple and other child performers.
Seguerra and de Leon also had a hilarious recollection of their screen rivalry in the 80s.
"Sinasabunutan ako ni Matet," recalled Seguerra, who rose to fame as a top finalist in the "Little Miss Philippines" contest of "Eat Bulaga."
De Leon, who is best known for her "Takot ako eh!" movie dialogue, also recalled how she misbehaved on the set, drawing the ire of her mother, Nora Aunor.
"Biyaheng Retro" airs Sunday, May 24, at 9 p.m. on Jeepney TV or SkyCable channel 9, with replays on succeeding weekends.
