MANILA - Actress Jodi Sta. Maria admitted that it was not easy to step into the iconic role of Amor Powers for the 2015 remake of the hit series "Pangako Sa 'Yo."
Fortunately, Sta. Maria said she was given enough time to prepare for the role originally played by Eula Valdez.
"At first sobrang na pressure ako at natakot ako. Hindi ko alam kung paano ko ihihiwalay 'yung ginawa kong character para sumulong ako sa bagong trabahong gagawin ko," she said, referring to her last role as Maya in the daytime series "Be Careful With My Heart," which she played for two years.
"Binigyan nila ako ng time para makapaghanda and also natutuwa ako na binigyan kami ng liberty ng aming directors para magbigay ng insight kung paano namin gusto din buoin ang aming mga characters," she added.
Sta. Maria also conceded that Valdez did a tremendous job as the original Amor Powers.
"Alam kong hindi madali dahil napakagaling ni Ms. Eula, very iconic 'yung role na pinortray niya at napakataas ng respeto ko sa kanya bilang artista. Siguro hindi ko na maiaalis talaga na maikumpara pero siguro kailangan kong gawin ang kailangan kong gawin bilang isang artista," the actress added.
Then and now
Sta. Maria was actually involved in the original "Pangako Sa 'Yo," where she played the character of Lia, the daughter of Eduardo and Claudia Buenavista.
"Parang hindi lang din ako makapaniwala na sa original ay naging part ako ng 'Pangako Sa 'Yo' and now I'm doing it with different character and it's such a blessing and privilege to be Amor Powers," Sta. Maria said.
In the interview, Sta. Maria also admitted that she has mixed emotions doing confrontations and slapping scenes with co-star Angelica Panganiban, who will play the role of Claudia, the main contravida in the upcoming series.
"Nae-excite ako pero at the same time, kasi sabi ko nga nai-intimidate ako kay Angelica. Pero very thankful ako kasi alam ko na napaka-professional na katrabaho ni Angelica," Sta. Maria said.
"Pangako Sa 'Yo" which stars Daniel Padilla and Kathryn Bernardo will debut on May 25 after "TV Patrol." It will be replacing "Forevermore," which is now down to its last week.
