MANILA, Philippines -- Batangas Governor Vilma Santos-Recto appealed to critics to give senatorial aspirant Nancy Binay a chance to serve the country.
"Binoto ng tao yan, pinagkatiwalaan 'yan. Ibigay naman natin ang tiwala sa kanya. Plus the fact na lumaki siya sa pamilya na may naiintindihan sa public service. So let's give her a chance," Santos-Recto said in an interview on ANC's "Headstart" on Thursday.
The award-winning-actress-turned-politician has been proclaimed Batangas governor for her third and final term. The Commission on Election said it was a landslide victory for Santos-Recto, who won by over 600,000 votes.
Her running mate, Vice Governor Mark Leviste, also kept his post.
Nancy, the daughter of Vice President Jejomar Binay, is being criticized for her lack of political experience and for refusing to participate in debates.
According to the latest unofficial results from the Comelec Transparency Server on Thursday, Binay is holding on the fifth spot.
Attacks against the United Nationalist Alliance senatorial candidate continued on Wednesday with the defacement of her Wikipedia profile.
Binay's Wikipedia page showed several changes. It said Binay "comes from a dynasty" in the Philippines and is professionally known as "Noggie," a play on the word "nognog" or a dark-skinned person.
