MANILA - Angelica Panganiban admitted she had reservations about impersonating TV host Kris Aquino, saying she sought her permission first before agreeing to do her now-famous "Krissy" character on ABS-CBN's "Banana Split."

Panganiban has been impersonating Aquino on the late-night gag show since 2009.

Panganiban took inspiration from "SNN," Aquino's showbiz talk show with Boy Abunda at the time.

Comedian Jason Gainza was paired with Panganiban to imitate the duo.

Speaking on radion DZMM on Tuesday, Panganiban recalled she was concerned that Aquino might get angry over the spoof of the program.

"Sabi ko talaga ipagpaalam muna nila, kasi nag-start 'yan nung meron silang 'SNN.' Then my spoof kami na 'NNNN.' Ipaalam niyo muna.'

"Sabi nila, 'Sige, shoot muna natin tapos paalam nalang natin after.' So shinoot namin.

Aquino, Panganiban recalled, was amused with the material shown to her and did not have qualms about the younger actress' impersonation.

Since then, Panganiban's character has had different iterations, including one inspired by Aquino as she appears on the morning talk show "Kris TV," and more recently, a short-haired "Krissy," after the much-talked-about haircut of the TV host over a "heartbreak."

Sabi ko talaga, 'Thank you, Ate Kris! Hindi mo ako pinagbawalan!'"

Asked whether she often watches Aquino to study her mannerisms, Panganiban said it helps that they are friends.

She added that she tends to observe her when they get together.

"Atsaka pag nagkakasama kami, talagang... So para siyang tumatatak sa akin," she said.

Panganiban also recalled a time when Aquino requested "Banana Split" to temporarily stop segments spoofing her, following the death of her mother, former President Corazon Aquino, in August 2009.

So ginawa ko naman," Panganiban said.

"Banana Split" airs Saturdays at 9:15 p.m., and weeknights at 11:15 p.m.
