MANILA – Carmina Villarroel admitted that she and her husband Zoren Legaspi were both caught off guard when they learned that the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) has filed a tax evasion complaint against the actor.

Speaking on “Buzz ng Bayan” on Sunday, Villarroel said they have been paying their taxes.

“Pati ako naloka. Thursday lumabas 'yung issue. That day, naguluhan din kaming dalawa ni Zoren. Hindi rin namin alam what went wrong because nagbabayad kami ng buwis ni Zoren. [Prior to that], wala talagang [indication] that’s why we were clueless. Talaga kami ‘Ha, anong nangyari?’ Malinaw kasi sa amin na nagbabayad kami. Nag-panic kami,” she said.

In an effort to immediately settle the matter, Villarroel said she sent her sister-in-law and accountant to the BIR right away.

“Tomorrow babalik ulit dun 'yung accountant and 'yung sister-in-law ko to present our documents, our papers. Kasi 'yun lang naman ang gusto nila, na makita 'yung papeles na meron kami. Sa kaso ni Zoren, meron yata siyang hindi nabayaran, hindi ako masyadong sure. That’s why bukas pupunta sila ulit doon to clarify everything,” she said.

According to BIR Commissioner Kim Henares, Legaspi underdeclared his income for the taxable years 2010 and 2012 by declaring only P6.79 million in 2010, and P1.82 million in 2012.

"He substantially underdeclared his income tax by 42% in 2010 and 256% in 2012. We are assessing him with total income tax liability for taxable years 2010 and 2012 for total of P4.45 million," Henares said.

Legaspi has since expressed his willing to cooperate in the investigation, stressing he was not trying to avoid paying taxes.

"Sang-ayon po ako na ang tamang buwis ay dapat bayaran para sa ikakaunlad ng bayan," he said. "I'm more than willing to comply and cooperate to assess my tax liabilities. Aalamin po namin kung saan kami nagkamali,” he said.

Legaspi added: "I'm glad that BIR is investigating. That means they are doing their job. I love my country kaya I will never attempt to evade any taxes. I just need to figure out kung saan kami nagkamali (without malice) and I'm waiting lang po sa official letter ng BIR."

Legaspi, was last seen in a regular TV program in ABS-CBN's "Showbiz Inside Report" in 2013 as a co-host. He also has numerous commercial advertisements along with Villaroel and their twins, Cassy and Mavy.
