MANILA—As she bids goodbye to her hated role as the scheming Jade in the primetime hit “Halik,” Yam Concepcion is eyeing another “snake” character — this time the literal kind.
Concepcion, 30, was asked whether she would be up for trying out for the coveted role of Darna, following the withdrawal of Liza Soberano from the Star Cinema film project about the komiks icon.
“Ang daming nagsasabi na kamukha ko si Anjanette Abayari,” she said, referring to the former actress who portrayed Darna in a 1994 film.
“ ‘Bakit hindi ka mag-audition?’ Mag-audition kaya ako? Pero parang napi-feeling-an ako sa sarili ko,” she said. “Parang, bagay ba sa akin? Pero siyempre, ’pag naging Darna ka, part na ’yun ng history ng Pilipinas. So nakakatuwa, exciting, why not? Sana!”
She then quipped: “Or puwede ring Valentina, kasi ahas naman si Jade!”
Valentina is Darna’s nemesis in the comics, and is typically depicted as a woman who has live snakes as her hair.
The buzz surrounding the casting of the new Darna has yet to abate following Soberano’s exit. Concepcion’s name has been among those mentioned by fans suggesting a replacement.
Notably, the likes of Nadine Lustre, Pia Wurtzbach, and Maja Salvador have been fixtures in casting polls for the millennial iteration of the superhero.
