MANILA, Philippines – Gretchen Barretto walked out of her press conference held in Eastwood City on Wednesday night.
Barretto, who was then endorsing a beauty product, turned emotional after a number of entertainment reporters asked her to comment on speculations that she is being pitted against youngest sister Claudine Barretto, a former talent of the Kapamilya network.
The reporters pointed out that Gretchen’s much-awaited “Maalaala Mo Kaya (MMK)” episode will be aired the same timeslot as that of the launching of Claudine’s own drama anthology series in a rival network.
Gretchen’s MMK episode will be broadcast on April 10.
Gretchen said: “Hindi ko naman talaga alam ‘yong katapat. Kung sino ang katapat. Nalaman ko lang today (Wednesday). For me kasi, hindi negative ‘yong magkatapat kami. It’s positive kasi magkapatid kami.”
“Pareho kaming Barretto and we will dominate the 8:30 slot this Saturday. Kung ako ang magulang ng dalawang maglalabas sa two biggest stations, aba siyempre proud ako," she added.
When told that Claudine previously revealed that their parents were hurt by the knowledge that some people seemed to enjoy their purported sibling rivalry, Gretchen said: “Hindi ko alam kung ano ang nangyayari. I need to get hold of myself bago ako sumagot dahil wala akong intensyon na makasakit kahit kaninong damdamin.”
“Nandito ako to endorse my ad and ‘yon ayokong makasakit. Magkapatid kami. Hindi kami dapat pag-awayin.”
When another reporter prodded the issue, the elder Barretto said: “I don’t want to answer anymore. Thank you. Nasasaktan ako. This all started out as happy affair and then... Ayoko na."
The actress then stood and left the interview, with cameramen and reporters scurrying after her. Footage showed that she left the venue crying.
Gretchen’s talent manager, “SNN: Showbiz News Ngayon” host Boy Abunda, confirmed the walkout.
Abunda said SNN will show the video and report the whole story behind the walkout in Thursday's episode of SNN.
Wednesday’s incident was not the first time that the actress walked out during an ongoing interview.
In 2008, Gretchen left the studio of "Entertainment Live" after the program aired a video detailing her past rift with best friend Nadia Montenegro.
