MANILA, Philipines – Couple Mariel Rodriguez and Robin Padilla are set to have their Catholic wedding but things have become unsure as the church is opposed to it, according to a retired archbishop.

Former Lingayen Archbishop Oscar Cruz said the Catholic Church won’t allow Rodriguez and Padilla’s union because of some provisions of the Islamic law.

Because of this, “Showbiz News Ngayon” immediately sought the explanation of Cruz.

Cruz also stressed that Padilla’s first marriage must be taken into consideration.

“Ang una niyang kasal, ano ba iyon? Iyon ba ay may bisa o walang bisa? Kung may bisa hindi na puwedeng ikasal. Kung walang bisa, puwede siyang ikasal sa Katolika,” he said.

Meanwhile, Rodriguez quickly gave her reactions to the Cruz’s statements.

“Actually, ang naging agreement talaga ni Robin, that was the only thing I asked for, when we started, pinlay down niya ang mga cards niya. Ang he agrees,” she said.

The TV host also clarified the state of Padilla’s previous marriage with Liezl Sycangco.

“Legally separated na siya, so archbishop, wala tayong magiging problema,” she said.

Rodriguez and Padilla are reportedly planning to have their church wedding in June.
