Filipino rock band icon "The Dawn" showed their love not only for music but also for acting as they tour to promote the DVD release of their well-acclaimed independent film "Tulad ng Dati", as well as their 20th anniversary album with the same title.
"Yes, we are busy promoting the DVD of "Tulad ng Dati," the band's lead vocalist Jett Pangan told abs-cbnNews.com during their special television performance with ABS-CBN's morning show "Umagang Kay Ganda."
"Tulad ng Dati" (Just Like Before) is a short film based on the lives of "The Dawn"'s members. The film won Best Editing and Best Sound in the 2006 Pusan International Film Festival. The story revolves around the ups and downs of the band and the saddest part of the band's life -- the death of Teddy Diaz, the group's founder and original guitarist.
Asked if they would like to do a follow up to their indie film, Pangan said, "As of now hindi ko masasabi because I think whatever message or story we needed to tell nasabi na sa lahat sa pelikula so I don't think it warrants a sequel or something."
"The Dawn" and the music
The band who gained popularity during the late 80s, shared that their love for their craft is the secret to their band's success.
"It's the love for music, and to quote Jay Turias it's just 'tugtugang walang malisya," said Pangan.
According to Pangan, the group's bonding through playing music keeps them strong and motivated.
"Actually ang music talaga yung nag-yu-unite sa amin. I guess any band sa simula parang barkada 'yan we always hang out pero ngayon may sari-sarili na kaming pamilya we have other concerns, we have other busineses pero yung music pa din ang nagdadala sa amin.So I guess kapag 'yun ang motivation mo, no matter what happens yun pa din ang magiging glue that holds us together," he said.
The name "The Dawn" was given by the late Teddy Diaz since the word "dawn" has a positive, hopeful meaning. The band broke up in 1995 but after almost four years they reunited.
The Dawn was originally formed by Teddy Diaz (vocals and guitars), Jett Pangan (lead vocals), Clay Luna (bass), and JB Leonor (drums). In 1988, at the height of their popularity, Teddy Diaz was stabbed to death in front of his girlfriend's house by two bystanders allegedly under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
Then the band welcomed a masked guitarist -- "Zorro" but then in 1989, Atsushi Matsuura, a Japanese guitarist was inducted to perform lead guitar duties. He was later replaced by Francis Reyes, a former guitarist of the band "Afterimage".
Right now, The Dawn is composed of Jett Pangan, JB Leonor, Buddy Zabala and Francis Reyes.
Catch the band on April 14 in Cagayan de Oro, and watch their performances live around the Metro.
