With former Pres. Cory Aquino now undergoing chemotherapy after she was diagnosed with cancer of the colon, Kris Aquino, the ever dutiful and ever loving, caring daughter, has decided to drop everything - well, almost! - to spend as much as time as she can with her mom.
"It was just heart-breaking," Kris described how she felt when she and other members of the Aquino family were informed by the doctor about the sad/bad news last Monday.
Learning about Tita Cory’s condition was perhaps more heart-breaking than the other sad news that Kris received the next day (Tuesday) that she had a miscarriage.
"Maybe it’s God’s will, so that I can spend as much time as I can with my mom without risking my pregnancy," added Kris who has two sons, Joshua who’s turning 13 in June and James Jr., a year old on April 19.
Last Tuesday, Kris helped prepare food for Tita Cory, consisting mostly of egg whites which are, according to the doctor, good for colon-cancer patients. Pres. Cory is staying in daughter Ballsy’s house in Green Meadows for the meantime.
"We members of the family alternate in being with and taking care of my mom," revealed Kris. "I go to Ate Ballsy’s house early mornings and stay there until late afternoon. Yesterday, I was there from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. I had to accompany my mom to the salon of Bambbi (Fuentes) on Timog Avenue (Quezon City) for shampoo."
Kris explained that each of her mom’s chemo sessions goes on non-stop for two weeks, with the apparatus worn around her waist like a belt (the same type used by Mrs. Aurora "Mother Seiko" Tan, mother of Seiko Films boss Robbie Tan and Dr. Nellie Yu, who is a colon-cancer survivor; another survivor of a similar cancer is Vivian Sarabia, the original Eyewear Stylist to the Stars).
"After each session, she rests for one week before another two-week session. We have to be careful that the apparatus doesn’t get wet, so I brought my mom to Bambbi’s salon for shampoo," said Kris. "I have just bought a shampoo bowl and chair for her so she doesn’t have to go to Bambbi’s salon everytime she needs a shampoo; she can have it at home na lang."
On the way to Bambbi’s salon Wednesday, Kris recalled her mom telling her how touched she was by the outpouring of support she’s getting, including prayers and healing Masses for her. In their conversation, according to Kris, her mom would often mention Betty Go-Belmonte, founding chairman of The Philippine STAR who succumbed to the Big C in 1994.
"My mom said that she cried seeing Tita Betty in so much pain," said Kris. "She said that it was one of the few times that she cried."
Tita Cory sometimes sounded like she was making bilin to Kris.
"She was telling me to plan my career the way Ate Vi (Batangas Gov. Vilma Santos) planned hers," Kris continued. "Ate Vi was among the first ones who sent their words of support for my mom. Sabi ng mom ko, I should have another career after showbiz."
Helping Kris entertain her mom are Joshua and James Jr.
"Josh keeps on telling my mom, ‘Lola, you’re not sick naman, eh!’ Tuwang-tuwa naman ang mom ko kay James who is fond of giggling. Sabi niya, si James daw is growing up to be like me, very jolly and very outgoing."
Incidentally, there’s no truth to reports that Kris is temporarily quitting showbiz to take care of her mom.
"I have to work," she clarified. "But I see to it that I am with my mom during my free time. As I said, I am spending as much time with her as I can."
• Mr. and Mrs. Ricki James MacDonald (nee Jennifer "Flower" Simon) should still be in a honeymoon mood more than three weeks after they tied the knot at a "wedding with a native touch" last March 4 at the Malate Catholic Church. After the hour-long ceremony (during which Ricki and Jenny kissed twice passionately, much to the amusement of well-wishers), the newly-weds walked to the nearby Aristocrat Restaurant for the reception, followed by the principal and secondary sponsors, while fireworks lit up the plaza across the church. The couple plans to settle down in the US.
