MANILA — He told his fans to follow the quarantine rules, to religiously wash their hands, and not to blame each other for the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

He also highlighted the sacrifices the frontliners —health workers, police, soldiers—  have to make in these trying times. “Hindi lang iyong sarili nila ang inilalagay nila sa panganib kung hindi pati ang pamilya nila,” he said.

But perhaps Gloc-9’s most notable message during his charity Facebook live this Tuesday night, one that was not lost on his fans, came when he didn’t say anything at all. He just sang his old hit, “Upuan," to close out his rather short four-song set.

“Timely” was one of the most commented word on his stream while he rapped the verses to his song about out-of-touch government officials.

Amid all those asking for shoutouts in the comment section, many were jokingly tagging their mayors, some of which are currently under intense scrutiny because of their handling of the lockdown, imposed by the national government to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Gloc-9 did not mention any names himself, nor did he explain the decision to sing “Upuan.” He just called for Filipinos to unite in this fight against the virus: “Tayo-tayo rin ang magtutulungan …galangin natin ang isa’t-isa,” he said.

His performance was part of an initiative by local musicians, who are trying to raise funds to provide food and health protection packs for the urban poor in the metro.
