MANILA – Expect to see a "new" Ronnie Alonte in the upcoming Star Cinema movie “James and Pat and Dave” which he will headline along with Loisa Andalio and Donny Pangilinan.
Speaking to ABS-CBN News’ MJ Felipe on their first day of filming, Alonte admitted that he considers this project as his second chance as he promised to do better this time.
“Sobrang saya ko po kasi ito na 'yung matagal kong hinihintay. Dati, ang tagal kong natengga. Ito na ulit 'yun. Kumbaga start ko ito ulit. Bagong Ronnie 'yung makikita nila, fresh, parang wala silang nakitang Ronnie dati,” he said.
According to directed Theodore Boborol, the film is a spinoff of the 2016 hit film “Vince and Kath and James” and will focus on Alonte’s character as the one who was not chosen and was left behind.
“This time, ifo-follow namin 'yung kuwento ni James. At the end of the movie, si James 'yung hindi pinili. So naisip namin sa Star Cinema na what if ikuwento naman natin 'yung istorya ng taong hindi napipili. May mahahanap ba silang happy ending? May love story nga ba sila? Bakit nga ba sila hindi pinili?” the director said.
“Maraming ganung pelikula sa Star Cinema [na may mga hindi pinili]. So nagwo-wonder ka kung anong nangyari sa kanya. Napaka-interesting i-follow nung story,” he added.
When asked if it was Alonte who requested that Andalio be his leading lady, since they are a couple in real life, the actor was quick to say no.
“Kapag Ronnie Alonte, Loisa na 'yung kasama nun. Pero hindi po [ako 'yung nag-suggest na siya 'yung i-cast]. Talagang siya 'yung bagay sa role na binigay ng Star Cinema kaya sa kanya napunta,” he said.
But being handpicked by Star Cinema also gave Andalio mixed emotions.
“Nakaka-pressure kasi first time ko mabigyan ng ganitong role. Ito 'yung pinakamalaking break na binigay sa akin. After four years, first time ko mag-lead sa Star Cinema. Sobra akong excited na makita nila 'yung gagawin namin dito,” she said.
Andalio, however, said she is at ease with her character because she and Pat have so much similarities.
“'Yung character ko, hndi siya nalalayo sa akin -- jologs, palengkera, taong kalye. Ganun naman ako. Kaya excited ako makita ng mga tao yung gagawin ko dito,” she said.
Meanwhile, Pangilinan chose not to look at his role as the third wheel.
“Well siyempre, itong dalawang ito, sobrang close nila. Love team sila. It’s not shocking na they will think [na third wheel ako]. Pero I think, we are selling a story and not a love team. I think the story will be the main focus of this movie,” he said.
Echoing Andalio’s statement, Pangilinan said this is also his biggest break to date and he wants to make it memorable.
“Sobrang pressured din ako but excited din. First film ko under Star Cinema and I also believe this is also my biggest break. I am just super excited na kasama ko silang tatlo and I really want to learn in this journey,” he said.
Since the movie is a sequel, Alonte said he is open to the idea of also having his “Vince and Kath and James” co-stars appear in the new film.
“Bakit hindi po? Kumbaga wala naman sa akin 'yung decision na iyon, nasa Star Cinema na po iyon,” he said. “Open po ako sa lahat. Mas maganda nga po iyon. Sama-sama kami. Mas maganda yung promotion and mas maganda yung pelikula. May Joshua (Garcia), may Julia (Barretto). Mas maganda. Para sa amin, walang issue 'yung mga ganung bagay.”
"James and Pat and Dave" will hit cinemas soon.
