"It's one of the best covers I've ever seen."
This was how Canadian musician Shawn Mendes described Sam Mangubat's acoustic rendition of his hit, "Mercy."
In an interview with ABS-CBN News' MJ Felipe a day before his concert at the Mall of Asia Arena, the Vine-star-turned-pop-singer was shown Mangubat's soulful cover on YouTube (video below).
"He sounds amazing. This kid's killing it," Mendes said of the Pinoy cover artist, who early this month placed second in the grand finals of the rebooted "Tawag ng Tanghalan."
Mendes was then asked for his advice to Mangubat, given that he also started out by uploading covers online before growing a devoted fan base and signing into a record label.
"For people like him and everyone else making covers, they have to understand that it was just 2 or 3 years ago that I was doing the same so things happen fast. Always stay positive, keep making covers and stay original," he said.
Referring to Mangubat, Mendes added: "I hope he keeps singing."
Mendes arrived in the country last Wednesday ahead of his Saturday performance, which is part of his world tour promoting his second album, "Illuminate."
He admitted he wanted to fly in early to Manila so he could take a brief break and soak up some summer heat. "I love the heat. I hate it when it's cold outside," said Mendes.
On Friday, he uploaded photos from his mini-vacation to Cavite.
Mendes is known for hits such as "Stitches" and "Treat You Better," which peaked at number six on the US Billboard Hot 100.
