MANILA – Yassi Pressman and Sam Milby are teaming up anew to uncover a mysterious case in their own town in the upcoming iWant original series “The Tapes.”

Based on its official synopsis, the six-part series is set in the '90s and follows the story of Sonnyboy (Milby) and Alice (Pressman), two cops living in a sleepy town where nothing really happens. They are rattled out of their routines when Sonnyboy receives a series of tapes sent to him anonymously.

The tapes contain disturbing snippets of incidents related to a cold case – the talked-about disappearance of a local lass named Judy. Distrustful of their boss, Sonnyboy and Alice hide the new evidence and must skip standard procedures to find answers.

However, the more tapes they watch and the more clues they find, the more unsettling Sonnyboy’s dreams become. Visions and unknown forces start to plague both Sonnyboy and Alice, making them question whether their hometown is haunted by mere secrets or by the supernatural.

“Nung narinig ko, it was very exciting. I’ve never heard of anything like it before. Marami siyang maiiwan na mga tanong. That’s what’s going to keep you hooked,” Pressman said in an interview on Thursday.

Aside from its thrilling plot, Pressman said the challenge to create a new character also enticed her to accept the project.

“Ibang iba sa role ko as Alyana na parating nakikita sa ‘Probinsyano’ gabi-gabi. Para sa akin, si Alyana parang iisa na kami eh. Kahit anong mangyari, kahit walang lines 'yung eksena, kaya kong isipin on the spot kasi it is me. Si Alice, when I played her, it was very exciting kasi kailangan ko talagang pag-isipan. We had so many things to play around with,” she said.

To complete the mysterious feel of the story, the whole series was shot entirely in Baguio with the cast and crew locked in.

“Feeling ko nakatulong din po sa amin na sa Baguio talaga kami nag-shoot. Mararamdaman mo 'yung eeriness but at the same time, mayroon ding lightness. Si Alice at si Cruz, very close sila. Para silang best friends pero parang hindi. Nagba-balance siya doon sa contrast ng story,” said Pressman.

Noting that this is a first of its kind here in the Philippines, Pressman is hoping the Filipino audience is ready for a series like “The Tapes.”

“It’s very far from 'yung mga mahal nating mga pelikula at mga series. Let’s see, sana [they are ready] kasi parang nagbro-broaden na 'yung taste din ng mga tao. Minsan gusto natin tumawa, minsan hindi,” she said.

“I think it’s beautiful that ABS-CBN has provided the platform for the Filipinos po siyempre na anywhere, anytime, sa iWant pwede mo makuha 'yung mga projects na hindi nagagawa sa mainstream TV and cinemas. It‘s very experimental,” she added.

“The Tapes” is helmed by Bradley Liew, the Malaysian-born and Philippine-based director of the horror film “Motel Acacia.”

The cast of the iWant original series also includes Ricky Davao, Felix Rocco, Perry Dizon, Barbara Ruaro and Brian Sy with the special participation of Cherie Gil.

It will drop in the streaming platform beginning March 18.
