MANILA - The governor of Abra on Sunday thanked the late comedian Chokoleit for his "utmost level of professionalism" during a performance in the province shortly before his passing.
Chokoleit, whose real name was Jonathan Aguilar Garcia, experienced difficulty in breathing after performing at a show called Kawayan Festival 2019 on Saturday night, his talent agency, Star Magic, confirmed.
The comedian was rushed to the Abra Provincial Hospital, where he succumbed to pulmonary edema and heart attack, his attending physician Dr. Rosauro Seares said.
"His demise sadden our hearts and we are indeed very grateful as he shared his final moment up on stage sharing his artistry, giving our fellow [Abrenian] not only laughter but a sense of hope and love, and gracing our celebration with utmost level of professionalism," Abra Governor Joy Bernos said in a statement.
"Hats off to your great performance, friendship and love extended to the whole people of Abra. Again, we extend our prayers, thanks and love to our dear friend Chokoleit," she added.
Chokoleit was featured in ABS-CBN movies and shows, most notably in 2004's Kapamilya fantaserye "Marina".
During Saturday's performance, he sang "Kahit Maputi na ang Buhok Ko," and drew laughs and applause with his stand-up quips.
Chokoleit's remains were still in a funeral home in Abra, as of this posting.
