MANILA – Upcoming “Darna” star Jane de Leon paid tribute to actresses who have similarly donned the costume in the past to commemorate International Women’s Day.

On Sunday, de Leon posted on Instagram photos of past Darnas including Nanette Medved, Anjanette Abayari, Vilma Santos, Sharon Cuneta, Regine Velasquez, Angel Locsin, Marian Rivera and Liza Soberano.

Saying she respects and salutes all these women, de Leon thanked them for being symbols of “strong and independent” Filipinas.

De Leon said they are “the voice of their generation who have been continuously doing their part as superheroes behind the costume through their individual achievements, efforts, and advocacies to help humanity and nature in general.”

“You are all and will always be an inspiration today and onwards,” she added.

De Leon, 21, is taking on the coveted role in an upcoming film produced by Star Cinema and directed by Jerrold Tarog (“Heneral Luna,” “Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral”).

De Leon, whose training for the project is ongoing, is the third actress to be attached to the titular role after Locsin and Soberano, who both had to withdraw due to medical reasons.
