MANILA -- The week-long battle of "Tawag ng Tanghalan" continued on Tuesday with powerful performances from the remaining five grand finalists.
The showdown started with Lipa City's teen belter Pauline Agupitan who performed "Nais Ko" by Basil Valdez.
Her performance was praised by judge Karla Estrada.
"Napaka-powerful ng voice mo. Ang stage presence mo ay nangingibabaw so kahit may kaunting pagkakamali, madaling maipagtanggol kasi ang galing-galing mong magdala every time na nagpe-perform ka. Ginalingan mo kaya para sa akin ay congratulations in advance," Estrada said.
Grand finalist Froilan Canlas, meanwhile, gave a soulful rendition of the OPM classic "Anak" by Freddie Aguilar.
"Talagang kinilabutan ako sa performance mo," judge Kyla told Canlas, who is a teacher.
"Para sa akin, I think this is the best rendition so far ng 'Anak' na kinanta ng lalaki. Sobrang creative and out of the box, ang ganda-ganda. 'Yung sound mo is varied. Ang lawak ng musicality mo, 'yung nuances mo at yung control."
Cover artist Sam Mangubat from Batangas wowed the audience and the judges with his rendition of "Ikaw" composed and recorded by "Tawag" judge Yeng Constantino.
"Kapag naririnig ko ang boses mo, it's very, very expressive. Ang ganda ng song choice mo, 'Ikaw,' ang wedding song ni Ms. Yeng, most viewed sa YouTube at alam mo talaga ang kakantahin mo. A beautiful song that matches your beautiful voice," Karylle said.
Mary Gidget dela Llana of Laguna, who became emotional after her performance of "Gaano Kadalas Ang Minsan?" by Basil Valdez, received some tips from Constantino.
"Siguro sa nerbiyos mo ay nag-scramble ang lyrics I think it's something na matutunan natin along the way na even sa height ng emotion mo ay kailangan mong ma-compose ang sarili mo. Pero ang pinaka-importante sa akin na nagawa mo ngayong araw na ito ay 'yung spirit mo na lumaban and for that (I'm very) happy," Constantino said.
Finally, Eumee Capili from Bulacan sang "Bridge Over Troubled Water" by Simon and Garfunkel.
"Ang masasabi ko lang naman talaga kay Eumee ay simple lang: Eumee, malupit ka talaga, hanep ka talaga," head judge Rey Valera told her.
Canlas, who joined the competition to help his mother, is now part of TNT's Top 5 after he received the highest total score of 98.9% from the combined text votes and judges scores. He will be part of the grand showdown on Saturday at Resorts World Manila.
