MANILA – Shaina Magdayao had the best time of her life when her movie “Ang Panahon ng Halimaw” competed at this year's Berlin International Film Festival.
Magdayao said she felt honored to have represented the Philippines in the prestigious event.
“It was very overwhelming kasi 'yung kasama namin sa sinehan were not Filipinos. Ibang lahi sila. So nakakatuwa and nakaka-overwhelm whenever they would praise your work and they would really appreciate 'yung hard work na nilagay niyo sa movie,” she told ABS-CBN News on Sunday.
When asked how their movie was received, she said: “Tuwang tuwa sila sa mga Pilipino. Sobra nilang nirerespeto 'yung gawa natin and at the same time, sobra nilang nirerespeto si direk Lav Diaz. Sobra sobra yung pasasalamat ko that he trusted me.”
But more than competing at the international festival, Magdayao noted that working with Diaz alone was already an honor.
“To be very honest, hindi ko rin alam kung ano ba ang nakikita niya sa akin kung bakit niya ako kinukuha nang kinukuha. To be able to work with him once is already more than enough. Pero last year, nabigyan ako ng pagkakataon na makatrabaho siya not just for a project but for two movies. Sobra sobra 'yung blessing,” she said.
Aside from “Ang Panahon ng Halimaw,” Magdayao is also part of Diaz’s “Enrico’s Farm” along with Charo Santos Concio.
Meanwhile, Magdayao explained why she and her “Ang Panahon ng Halimwar” co-actor Piolo Pascual appeared very sweet at the red carpet in Berlin.
“Nagulat ako kasi sabi niya he didn’t make it sa flight. Apparently, the joke was on me. Everyone knew na he made it, nandoon naman siya. Kaya ganun na lang kami sa red carpet,” she said.
Diaz describes "Ang Panahon ng Halimaw" as a "rock opera." It features 33 of his original compositions, as performed by Pascual, Magdayao and Bituin Escalante.
It was one of 19 films competing for the prestigious Golden Bear prize at the festival.
