MANILA — Today, February 11, would have been the fourth anniversary of James Reid and Nadine Lustre as a couple, as their legion of fans remembered, notably with the trending hashtag #J4DINE.
Tweets of memories proved bittersweet for long-time “JaDine” followers in the wake of their idols’ breakup, which they confirmed just a month short of their anniversary.
That’s an all too familiar feeling for fans of other love teams, who, like “JaDine,” had an onscreen romance that bled into real life, only to part ways for good years later.
Here’s a look at other reel-to-real tandems in recent years whose respective relationship ultimately led to a breakup:
Joshua Garcia and Julia Barretto
Known to their fans as “JoshLia,” Garcia and Barretto changed their relationship status from official to mere “best friends” in June 2019, three years after their onscreen tandem was launched. Following the breakup, Barretto was romantically linked with fellow Star Magic artist Gerald Anderson — a rumor they’ve both since denied. Garcia, meanwhile, has found a new love team in Janella Salvador. Instagram: @garciajoshuae
Elmo Magalona and Janella Salvador
Launched via the primetime series “Born For You,” the “ElNella” tandem became a real-life relationship for two years until their controversial breakup in October 2018, with Salvador accusing Magalona of physically hurting her. Salvador has since found a new leading man in Joshua Garcia, while Magalona only recently returned to acting via the war drama “A Soldier’s Heart.” Instagram: @superjanella
Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson
A budding love team as early as their “Pinoy Big Brother” stint in 2006, “Kimerald” went on to become the biggest screen pairing among their contemporaries. Their real-life romance, however, ended controversially in 2010. Over the decade since, the two have managed to be in good terms again, and have even reunited numerous times onscreen. Angelica Panganiban and Carlo Aquino
Formed during their preteen years, the “Cargel” tandem became a real-life romance that lasted a total of six years. The two broke up twice, and years later appeared to rekindle their relationship when they reunited onscreen for the 2018 film “Exes Baggage.” That apparent third chance turned sour, however, with the two becoming estranged. Aquino is now in a relationship with model Trina Candaza, while Panganiban remains single. Instagram: @jose_liwanag
Anne Curtis and Sam Milby
Dubbed “Masenna” by their loyal followers, this former couple was “on and off” for four years. They eventually mended ties as friends and even managed to work together in several film and TV projects after their third and final breakup. Curtis is now pregnant with her first child with her husband, restaurateur and vlogger Erwan Heussaff. Milby, who remains single, has described Curtis as his “greatest love” in various interviews. Kristine Hermosa and Jericho Rosales
“EchoTin,” as they are known to their long-time fans, ended their real-life romance after their fights became increasingly frequent amid the pressure of juggling it with a career, Rosales belatedly revealed in 2009. The two are now respectively married — Hermosa with actor Oyo Sotto, and Rosales with model and host Kim Jones. ABS-CBN.com
Rico Yan and Claudine Barretto
Barretto and Yan, arguably the most popular “love team” in the late ‘90s, was also together off-screen for most of their years as the reigning box-office stars of local cinema. The two were rumored to have already broken up when Yan died in March 2002 due to acute hemorrhagic pancreatitis. After her relationship with Yan, Barretto married actor Raymart Santiago, with whom she has two children. They have since separated. Star Cinema
